Verdi - Don Carlo, new production in the Slovak National Theatre
Martin Leginus, who did not owe anything to his reputation as a keen Verdi conductor, took on the musical direction. His conception reveals thoughtful and thorough preparation, knowledge of the context including the extensive performing tradition. Don Carlo, despite the shorter version used, is an extraordinarily comprehensive and musically vivid work that demands outright architectural skill from the conductor. Leginus's interpretation is strategically constructed from small considered details to a grand edifice whose contours are sovereignly evident throughout.
